PLACENTIA — El Modena High’s wrestling team, fifth-ranked in Orange County, defeated fourth-ranked El Dorado, 39-24, in a nonleague meet Tuesday night at El Dorado.
When it was over, El Modena Coach Alan Clinton wondered if a matchup between highly ranked teams this early in the season was such a good idea.
“One team that’s pretty awesome is going to walk away from this saying, aw . . . ,” Clinton said.
El Dorado dominated the lighter and heavier weight classes, but El Modena was strongest in the middle, and that was enough to win.
Huan Alvarez of El Modena pinned Chris Ota 1 minute 12 seconds into their 135-pound match, starting the Vanguards on six consecutive victories. The streak ended with Josh Smith’s forfeit victory over the injured Jon Gentner at 171.
