The University of San Diego almost blew a 14-point halftime lead, but a key rebound by Lynda Jones and two clutch free throws by Angie Straub with under a minute to play sealed the 71-67 nonconference victory over UC Irvine for the Toreras, and broke a two-game USD losing streak.
Karie Yoshioka scored to pull UCI to 69-67 with 34 seconds to go. With 19 seconds left, Angie Straub missed a free throw and Jones got the rebound. Jones got the ball to Straub, who was fouled with 14 seconds and she converted both.
USD (2-4) went on a 12-point run early on for a 14-2 lead. Chris Enger and Jones each scored 16 points, which tied Kathy Lizarraga of Irvine (3-5) for game-high honors.
San Diego State let a six-point halftime lead disintegrate and lost to Hawaii, 72-70, in a nonconference contest at Peterson Gym.
The Aztecs led by as much as 11 points in the first half and took a 38-32 halftime lead. But Hawaii took its first lead with 7:31 left in the game, got up by as much as seven, and never trailed thereafter.
Kieishsha Garnes led the Aztecs with 28 points. Freshman Christina added 12.
