A sheriff’s deputy who might owe his life to a bulletproof vest was released from Sharp Memorial Hospital in Kearny Mesa on Wednesday, officials said.
Deputy Michael J. Vaszorich, 46, was shot in the left side with a .357 magnum as he investigated a report Tuesday of a man firing a gun in Ramona.
The incident occurred shortly after 11:30 p.m. when Vaszorich and Sgt. Tom Cleary entered an apartment in the 100 block of 14th Street, where they encountered Domingo Gutierrez Martinez, 25.
Martinez allegedly drew a handgun from his waistband, and Cleary grabbed for the weapon as it fired. The bullet struck Vaszorich, who was wearing a bulletproof vest.
Martinez is being held without bail on suspicion of two counts of attempted murder, officials said.
