The Calgary Flames made the San Jose Sharks pay dearly for their last visit to the Olympic Saddledome.
The Flames, the only team to lose to the expansion Sharks at home this season, scored six goals in the second period and crushed San Jose, 10-3, on Wednesday night.
The Sharks, who won, 2-1, at Calgary on Nov. 30 and also beat the Flames, 4-3, at the Cow Palace on Oct. 8 for their first victory, were buried under a second-period barrage of 20 shots as the Flames broke open a scoreless game.
St. Louis 5, New York Rangers 3--Brett Hull’s goal-scoring streak reached 10 games as he connected three times at New York.
Hull moved within three games of the modern NHL record for consecutive games with a goal, set by the Kings’ Charlie Simmer in 1979-80, by scoring once in each period. He also had an assist and has a 19-game point-scoring streak.
Montreal 3, Boston 2--Kirk Muller scored one goal and set up another at Montreal as the Canadiens continued their runaway in the Adams Division.
Muller assisted on a goal by Denis Savard while Shayne Corson also scored as Montreal (28-14-2) stretched its lead over second-place Boston to 17 points by winning for the sixth time in its last seven games.
Winnipeg 5, Edmonton 2--Bob Essensa made 40 saves at Winnipeg as the Jets survived the loss of their leading goal-scorer, Ed Olczyk.
Olczyk was carried from the ice on a stretcher near the end of the second period with his left leg in a splint after what initially looked like a routine tumble. Preliminary reports said he had a separated elbow and an injured ankle.
Buffalo 4, Quebec 2--The Nordiques remained winless on the road in 20 games this season as Pat LaFontaine scored his 300th career goal to lead the Sabres.
