Carter Hawley Reports Lower Sales: Blaming the continuing weak California economy, Carter Hawley Hale Stores Inc., operator of Broadway and other department stores, reported that combined sales for November and December, 1991, were $582.8 million, down 7% from the $626.8 million posted in the prior year. The company, in bankruptcy reorganization since February, did not release its net losses for the two-month period. However, the company said its performance has been further eroded by the state’s poor economy and eroding consumer confidence. The company said it lost $10.5 million in November when sales were $195.7 million, 12% below the prior year. It did not release December losses.
