South El Monte : Fence Ordinance Adopted

The City Council has unanimously approved an ordinance to provide for fencing of abandoned properties.

City officials said the ordinance is expected to provide an incentive to owners of light-manufacturing concerns and apartment complexes to keep up their properties. South El Monte doesn’t have a critical problem with deteriorating properties, and the measure will help keep it that way, officials said.

Property is defined as abandoned if it is developed but has not been used or occupied for more than 30 days.

Owners of such properties will be notified in writing and may request a hearing within 15 days of receipt of the notice. If no hearing is requested and the property remains abandoned, the city manager may order a barrier and charge the owner.
