Malibu : Bill to Seek CHP Patrols
Assemblyman Tom Hayden (D-Santa Monica) announced this week that he will introduce legislation to have the California Highway Patrol enforce traffic laws on Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu.
The Malibu City Council voted unanimously in November to ask Hayden to sponsor such legislation.
Under the proposal, the CHP would be paid an amount at least equal to the fines and forfeitures it received during the fiscal year that ended last June, before Malibu incorporated and became responsible for its own traffic enforcement.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department provides both traffic and general law enforcement in Malibu. City officials have said Malibu could save money by having the CHP resume its responsibility for traffic enforcement on the busy coastal highway.
