Costa Mesa came prepared for the Pacific Coast League game against Estancia Thursday night at Estancia High School. And so did Olivia DiCamilli, Costa Mesa’s leading scorer and all-everything player.
Although Estancia gave the Mustangs everything it had, the Mustangs won, 58-49. It was the first time Costa Mesa (14-6, 5-0 in league) had defeated Estancia (11-8, 3-2) since the Eagles rejoined the league last season.
“We played them last year and lost both times,” Costa Mesa Coach Jim Weeks said. “Anytime we get together, no matter who has the best record, both teams come fired up.”
DiCamilli, who scored 24 points--11 in the first quarter--and had 11 rebounds, started the game fired up, but got into early foul trouble, picking up three fouls by the second quarter. With 3 minutes 44 seconds remaining in the half, Weeks took the junior out of the game. But Costa Mesa led, 28-22, at halftime.
With DiCamilli back in the game in the second half, the Eagles came to within four points, 28-24, but it was the closest they came. Estancia made a run in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Mustangs, 22-16. Monique Sweet led the Eagles with 15 points.
