NATION IN BRIEF : WASHINGTON, D.C. : Stiffer Gun Crime Sentences Sought

Atty. Gen. William P. Barr told federal prosecutors to ask federal judges to invoke a provision of the sentencing law to impose longer sentences for crimes involving the use of a semiautomatic weapon. He also instructed prosecutors to seek tougher sentences for the use of such guns by gang members. “Gang violence is at a very high level,” Barr said in a memorandum that noted in the first nine months of 1991 there were 561 gang-related murders in Los Angeles.
