Kevin Mitchell of the Seattle Mariners was involved in a barroom brawl in his hometown of San Diego late Friday night, police said. Although police said the fight started when Mitchell made a remark to a woman, he was not arrested.
One person in the fight, which escalated to include many patrons of Smokey’s Night Club near Jack Murphy Stadium, sustained a split lip and tongue and one of Mitchell’s companions, Raymond Hightower, was charged with assault with a deadly weapon.
Police Lt. Tom Orden said the deadly weapon portion of the charge was included because Hightower kept hitting someone who was already unconscious.
