Astro Outfielder Gets Broken Nose When Hit by Pitch From Machine

KISSIMMEE, Fla. — Outfielder Luis Gonzalez of the Houston Astros sustained a broken nose Wednesday while retrieving balls in a batting cage when a batting machine unexpectedly unleashed a ball that struck him in the face.
Gonzalez said he thought the machine had been turned off and started to pick up baseballs when the machine threw one more pitch.
“What a way to start spring training,” Gonzalez said. “I’m just thankful the ball didn’t hit me any higher. It could have been career-ending. Guys were everywhere picking up balls, but I was the only one near home plate.”
Gonzalez, who will take two days off and return to Houston for further examination, said his vision does not appear to be affected.
