N. HOLLYWOOD, LANCASTER : Disaster Assistance Centers to Open

Two state and federal disaster assistance centers opened Tuesday to help Lancaster and North Hollywood residents whose homes or businesses were damaged during last month’s floods to apply for low-interest loans and government grants.

Disaster center representatives will be at the North Weddington Park Community Center at 10844 Acama St. in North Hollywood and at Lancaster City Hall at 44933 N. Fern Ave. from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. through Sunday, said Kurt Liepman, spokesman for the centers.

Center staff can also arrange free temporary housing through the federal Disaster Housing Assistance Program for flood victims forced from their homes.

For faster service, residents are encouraged to use a toll-free hot line, (800) 462-9029, available from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., to apply for assistance. Hearing- and speech-impaired flood victims can reach a representative at (800) 462-7585. Operators are fluent in a number of languages, including Spanish and Vietnamese.

Applicants visiting the centers should bring some proof of their residence and their insurance papers to expedite matters, Liepman said. Once the application is received, agents will conduct on-site inspections to check the extent of the damage, he said.

Other disaster assistance centers are in Westminster, Hesperia and Ventura.
