OUTLOOK
Hammond takes over as varsity coach for the traditionally strong St. Joseph program, replacing Debbie Haley, who moved to an assistant’s role after the recent birth of her son. Haley compiled a 130-46-2 record in seven seasons as the Lancers’ coach and guided St. Joseph to five consecutive league titles from 1985-89. Hammond, who coached the St. Joseph junior varsity last year, inherits a team that returns 11 lettermen, including seven starters. St. Joseph, which also won the 1986 Southern Section 4-A championship and the 1989 5-A title, should challenge Mater Dei for the league title in 1992. The Lancers are led by Sparks, who earned first-team all-league and second-team All-Southern Section honors last year. Other first-team all-league players back are Ryan and Rogers. The outfield is solid and deep with starters Maciel, Larson and DiRe returning and four experienced players available on the bench. Bailey is expected to provide strong pitching to support Sparks.
