NATION IN BRIEF : NEW YORK : Gotti Witness Called Instigator of Killings

From Times Staff and Wire Reports

The attorney for John Gotti, the reputed head of the Gambino crime family, tried to distance his client from several murders described by former underboss Salvatore Gravano, suggesting that Gravano ordered the killings for his own reasons. Gravano, who admits to killing 19 people, was on the stand for a second day of cross-examination. He insisted that he had come clean about all his past wrongdoing. Gotti is accused of ordering five murders, including the December, 1985, assassination of former Gambino boss Paul Castellano.
