Raymond Floyd held off Fred Couples for a two-stroke victory in the Doral Open at Miami on Sunday, joining Sam Snead as the only man to win PGA Tour titles in four decades.
Floyd’s victory was his first since 1986 and the 22nd of a career that began in 1963. Snead won tournaments from the 1930s through ‘60s.
“This is very special for me,” Floyd said after completing the final round in 70, two under par on Doral’s Blue Monster course. His winning total was 17-under 271.
Couples was within one stroke of Floyd but missed birdie putts of eight feet on the 16th and 10 feet on the 17th and then bogeyed the final hole.
Judy Dickinson shot a two-under-par 70 to score a two-shot victory in the LPGA Inamori Classic at Poway, Calif. Meg Mallon carded five birdies for a 67 and took second at 279. Dickinson’s 277 matched the tournament record set at StoneRidge Country Club by Ayako Okamoto in 1988.
Tom Watson scored a three-shot victory in the Hong Kong Open.
