AST’s New Computer: Is AST Research Inc. in Irvine really ready to ship a multiprocessing computer?
The company said it will display this week a multiprocessing computer, which uses more than one brain--or microprocessor--to compute data at speeds that approach those of traditional minicomputers.
AST says its multiprocessing machine will sell for less than $25,000 and will have an “open architecture,” which means it can operate with software from a variety of different manufacturers.
The company had originally planned to begin marketing a multiprocessing computer in the fall of 1990. But the project has taken longer than expected, and AST now expects to to introduce the machine next summer.
