Would-Be Candidate Sues Registrar of Voters

SANTA ANA — A Newport Beach attorney is suing the Orange County registrar of voters, claiming that he was improperly disqualified to run for a Municipal Court seat in the June election.
Attorney James E. Wilkoski was disqualified because he did not submit enough nominating signatures, according to Registrar of Voters Donald F. Tanney.
Wilkoski, who filed his lawsuit Monday, said that he was one signature shy of the 20 required to be nominated and that two signatures were declared invalid because signers’ addresses did not match their voter registration cards.
“Who makes up these rules?” Wilkoski said Tuesday. “I don’t have an ax to grind. I just want to point out the stupidity of these rules.”
