EAST VALLEY : Funds OKd to Equip Police Bike Detail

The Los Angeles City Council has voted to spend $2,200 to help equip a detail of bicycle-riding Foothill Division police officers who will patrol several crime hot spots in the east San Fernando Valley.

Without debate, the council approved a motion by Councilman Ernani Bernardi to use money from his office budget account to purchase three bikes and equipment for the new detail, which is expected to begin patrolling this month.

The three officers in the detail will patrol the crowded Van Nuys Boulevard shopping area between Laurel Canyon and Glenoaks boulevards, Sgt. Sandy Jo MacArthur said. Their beat will include the 446-unit San Fernando Gardens city housing project, the privately owned, low-income Van Nuys Pierce Park apartment complex and the Pacoima Enterprise Zone.

“Street robberies are one of the biggest problems in this area,” MacArthur said.

Bernardi said the bike patrols have had an “instant impact on repressible crime” in other parts of the city.
