ADOPT-A-SLOT: Doris Brackney of Yorba Linda hadn’t expected to enter a recent Las Vegas slot machine tournament; her husband, Bill, surprised her with an entry as a gift. When she won first place of $28,000, she had an immediate plan for the money. The Brackneys are using most of it to “adopt” five families with temporary job problems because of the recession. . . . “Bill and I have been so fortunate, and we’ve always thought, ‘What if something like that happened to us?’ ” she says.
