Nichols Institute Earnings Drop: Nichols Institute, a San Juan Capistrano medical testing company, reported first-quarter net income of $1.1 million, or 8 cents per share, down 42% from the $1.9 million, or 13 cents per share, reported for the 1991 period. Revenue showed a 38% gain, to $69.9 million from $50.7 million. Albert L. Nichols, chairman and president, blamed the profit decline on increased interest payments related to financings in the second and third quarters of 1991 and losses incurred by the company’s operations in the Southwest.
