No. 5 Capistrano Valley Defeats Top-Ranked Irvine in Volleyball

Capistrano Valley stunned Irvine, Orange County’s No. 1-ranked boys’ volleyball team, 15-6, 6-15, 16-14, 6-15, 15-13, in a key South Coast League match Tuesday at Capistrano Valley.
Bryan Lawson had 32 kills and middle blocker Eric Seiffert added 25 kills and five blocks for the fifth-ranked Cougars (13-2, 8-1 in league), who moved into a first-place tie with the previously unbeaten Vaqueros (14-1, 8-1). Capistrano Valley, last year’s league champion, can clinch a share of the title Friday with a victory at Dana Hills.
Outside hitter Aaron Garcia had 20 kills for the Cougars and setter Eric McKelvie had 64 assists. Capistrano Valley rallied from a 12-8 deficit in the fifth game, outscoring Irvine, 7-1, the rest of the way for the victory.
