General Manager Ed Johnston was fired by the the Hartford Whalers. The team finished with the NHL’s third-worst record this season and lost $5 million. Johnson made several unpopular trades, dealing away Ron Francis, Kevin Dineen, Mike Liut, Ulf Samuelsson and Ray Ferraro.
