Alana Collins, a highly regarded guard from University High, signed a letter of intent Wednesday to play women’s basketball at Cal State Northridge.
Collins (5-foot-11) averaged 23.2 points and 14.5 rebounds a game last season and was selected The Times’ Westside player of the year. Collins was selected most valuable player of the Western League three times.
Craig Johnson, a highly touted 6-2 junior point guard from Archbishop Mitty in San Jose, will enroll at Chatsworth High in the fall, Chatsworth Coach Sandy Greentree said.
“I’ve heard that he could be a potential (NCAA) Division I or All-City-type of player,” Greentree said.
Chris Dunbar, an All-City Section 3-A Division selection from Chatsworth High, will play basketball next season at Cal Lutheran.
Dunbar, a point guard who helped lead Chatsworth to a share of the West Valley League title, is an excellent defender and he averaged 10.2 points and eight assists.
Chris Zambri and Charlie Wi, former standout golfers at Westlake High, qualified last weekend for the State Amateur tournament June 20-July 3 at Spyglass Hill and Pebble Beach.
Zambri, who plays at USC, was first among 102 players in the qualifying tournament at La Purisima Golf Course in Lompoc. Zambri finished with a two-round total of 5-under-par 139. Wi, who attends Nevada, was third with a 149.
Moorpark College’s Kathi Morales, a sophomore outfielder, has been named to the All-Southern California junior college softball team. Teammates Heather Santiago and Stevie Campbell have been named to the second team.
Cal State Northridge swimming Coach Pete Accardy has signed five swimmers to letters of intent, including three from Denmark--Mark Vogel, Ian Wisler-Poulson and Jens Kristensen. He also signed Jill Ogden from Tacoma, Wash., and Adam Blaser from Live Oak, Calif.
Vogel, a backstroker, is a three-time national champion. Wisler-Poulson specializes in the butterfly and Kristensen swims the individual medley and sprint freestyle.
Ogden, a freestyler, led her high school team, Henry Foss, to the 3-A state championship. Blaser, of Yuba City High, swims the breaststroke and individual medley.
