Oxnard Harbor District commissioners have appointed a Port Hueneme dentist to fill a vacancy on the harbor board.
Robert E. Turner, 61, of Port Hueneme said he has never run for political office but has been involved in county service clubs and other community activities for many years.
The Board of Commissioners voted 3 to 1 Wednesday to appoint Turner. Commissioner Stanley J. Daily, the lone dissenter, voted for Steve Stocks, an Oxnard school trustee.
Turner, who has lived in Ventura County all his life, will fill a vacancy created when Bob Jennings announced his retirement last month. Turner will serve out the five months remaining in Jennings’ term and then face election in November.
In addition to Turner, 14 others applied for the position.
Turner graduated from Ventura High School in 1949 and worked at the Navy base in Point Mugu for 17 years as an electronics installer. He changed careers at age 41 when he obtained a degree in dentistry and opened his practice in Port Hueneme.
He and his wife, Caroline, have three adult children who live in the county.
