Huntington Beach pitcher Jon Ward came into Friday’s first-round Southern Section Division 5-A playoff game with the gaudy statistics--a 9-0 record, 1.26 earned-run average and county-leading 109 strikeouts. But Stovall was the one on the mound at the finish. After four innings of no-hit pitching, Ward was knocked out of the game in the fifth. Stovall, a 6-foot-6 left-hander, allowed only a sixth-inning single and struck out eight in Cypress’ 9-0 upset victory over the Oilers, who finished the regular season as the county’s No. 1 team. After Cypress broke through with seven runs in the fifth, the last six outs Stovall recorded were by strikeout. “I was glad that we finally started hitting the ball and finally the bloop singles started falling in,” Stovall said. “Everyone was telling me that I would need to pitch a shutout to beat him. And I had pretty much told the team that if you score two runs, I’ll do my part.”

Other top performers:

Kevin Alexander, who won the Division 2-A 100 meters in 10.89 seconds, the second-fastest time of the day. Alexander also finished third in the 200 meters in 22.17.

Billy Blanton, who hit two home runs, including a grand slam, and had six RBIs in Mater Dei’s 10-0 victory over Marina in the 5-A baseball playoffs.
