COLLEGE BASEBALL DAILY PLAYOFF REPORT : CAL STATE NORTHRIDGE : Pitchers Pleased Kernen

Although he was disappointed with the performance of the Northridge offense in the Midwest Regional, Coach Bill Kernen said he considered the Matador pitching staff “national-championship caliber.”

Northridge (38-16-1), which was eliminated from the playoffs Sunday, finished with a staff earned-run average of 3.27. The Matadors were ranked 12th in team ERA in the last NCAA ratings (May 12).

By fanning 11 in Northridge’s regional opener last Friday against Arizona State, Kenny Kendrena set a school single-season strikeout record. His 176 surpassed by 10 Craig Clayton’s standard of last season.

Kendrena completed his two-year CSUN career as the school’s leader in strikeouts (304), complete games (25) and shutouts (3). His 24 wins placed him fourth on the career list.
