Pitcher-designated hitter Brooks Kieschnick of Texas, a sophomore who had a .340 batting average, 66 runs batted in and a 10-2 pitching record with a 2.93 earned-run average, was named NCAA Division I player of the year by the American Baseball Coaches Assn.
