Tigers Sign SDSU’s Navarro

Two days after drafting him in the 13th round, the Detroit Tigers signed San Diego State pitcher Rick Navarro Thursday. Navarro, who was 9-1 with a 1.37 earned-run average for the Aztecs in 1992, was signed to a minor-league contract, Tiger area scout Mike Wallace said.

The Tigers also drafted Mark Redman, a left-handed pitcher from Escondido High in the 41st round on Wednesday. Redman was among the county leaders in strikeouts, with 85, and had a 6-4 record.

Other local draftees:

* Pitcher Tom Pack of Fallbrook High, who had a 7-3 record, 90 strikeouts and a 1.16 ERA, chosen in the 49th round by the New York Mets.

* Catcher Sean Gousha of the University of San Diego, an Orange Glen product who hit .236 over four seasons and had a .974 fielding percentage in 1992, chosen in the 39th round by expansion Florida Marlins.

* Right-handed pitcher Toby Lehman, a former San Marcos High player who was 8-4 with 65 strikeouts for Frank Phillips (Community) College in Borger, Tex., chosen in the 33rd round by the Chicago White Sox.

* Right-handed pitcher Jeff Matranga, 6-2, 170 pounds, a former Santana High and U.S. International player who was 10-6 with a 4.34 ERA and 121 strikeouts in 139 innings at Arizona State, chosen in the 31st round by the St. Louis Cardinals.

* Catcher Kiko Palacios of Castle Park, who had six home runs, 27 RBIs and a .469 average, chosen in the 22nd round by the Cleveland Indians.

* Catcher Paul Stojsavljevic, from Southwestern College and Hilltop High who has a scholarship to St. Mary’s of Moraga, chosen in the 23rd round by the Chicago Cubs.

Point Loma Nazarene senior outfielder Rich Miller was named second-team NAIA All-America. Miller, from Chandler, Ariz., batted .462, had a .780 slugging percentage, 18 doubles--all school records--and hit 12 home runs.

SOFTBALL

University of San Diego junior outfielder Marianne Stahl was named GTE Academic All-America in softball Thursday. She was the only player from California selected to the first team. Stahl, from Laguna Hills, led the Toreras with a .376 batting average. She has a 3.62 grade-point average as an accounting major.
