Who’s Ruining Whom, Anyway?

“I s Hollywood Ruining America?,” last Sunday’s report by Robert W. Welkos, has produced an outpouring from readers. A first sampling of their views: I don’t think there is any doubt that Hollywood is a money-hungry monster that exploits every aspect of human nature (from a white male perspective, of course), but the real monster is a white America that continues to want to fantasize and live its lives through other people.
These individuals make possible TV shows like “Murphy Brown,” “Roseanne” and “Married . . . With Children” and films like “Basic Instinct.” They live in this crap!
Now don’t get me wrong, African-Americans watch these shows too, but because of the social, economic and racial differences--most films and TV shows are about white people--our reality leaves little room for fantasy.
But to answer your question: No. America is ruining Hollywood.
