Brush Fire Drives Rancho Palos Verdes Residents From Homes

An out-of-control brush fire charred eight acres and drove residents from their homes Rancho Palos Verdes Sunday night, authorities said.
Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to evacuate homes near the Portuguese Bend area as the fast-moving flames threatened homes, said Sgt. Bob Stoneman.
He did not know how many residents were forced to leave.
The fire was reported at 8:15 p.m. on a hillside on Cartier Drive and was burning out of control three hours later, said Chris Rash, spokesman for the county Fire Department.
About 70 firefighters and two helicopters battled the blaze. The cause was under investigation.
Sheriff’s deputies evacuated residents near the Portugese Bend area, said Deputy Benito Hinojos.
Some residents were leading horses out of the danger area, while other people stood atop their roofs, watering them down with garden hoses.
Deputies from the sheriff’s Lomita station, which patrols the area, and the Carson and Lennox stations helped with the evacuation.
