An 18-year-old woman was fatally wounded and a 19-year-old man hurt in a fight that erupted early Saturday on a Logan Heights street corner, San Diego police said.
Police were called to the San Diego Trolley stop at the corner of 32nd Street and Commercial Avenue at 12:24 a.m., when witnesses reported the fight.
Four or five Latinos had squared off against the same number of blacks, witnesses told police. But officers arrived to find only bloodied rocks.
A few minutes later, a motorist flagged down a patrol car in the 700 block of 5th Avenue downtown, seeking help for Monica Chapa, 18, of El Cajon, authorities said. She had been hit with a rock and had a severe head wound, officers said.
Chapa was rushed to UC San Diego Medical Center but was pronounced dead at 12:51 a.m., the county medical examiner’s office said.
Meanwhile, paramedics were called to the 3100 block of Clay Street, where they found Wardell Campbell, 19, of San Diego, with a stab wound to the chest. Police said they believe Campbell had been stabbed in the fight at the trolley stop.
Campbell was in fair condition Saturday.
