Jan Zelezny’s world-record javelin throw of 310 feet 10 inches should make him the overwhelming favorite for the Olympic gold medal. In Barcelona, though, Zelezny will have to throw with a different model javelin than he used Saturday in the record-breaking toss at Oslo.
The rules say that any new javelin model must be approved by the technical committee of the IAAF, track and field’s international governing body, and be made available for all throwers at least two years before it can be used in major championships.
Zelezny set the record with a javelin designed by 1976 Olympic champion Miklos Nemeth of Hungary, which has not been approved for the Games.
