MESSAGE II: “The Message” isn’t the only significant musical calling card for Melle Mel and Scorpio. They both participated in such other significant rap projects as “White Lines,” the 1983 anti-cocaine song, and “Sun City,” the all-star anti-apartheid recording in 1985.
Still, Mel and Scorpio are pretty much footnotes in rap history today. Rap hasn’t paid their bills for years. They are hoping that changes with “The New Message” and a new album for MCA.
To support themselves in recent years, however, they danced to a different tune. Both were Chippendale’s dancers.
“We still want to do that Chippendale’s stuff--dancing on the tables and all,” Scorpio said. “We love that. That’s our thing--like our hobby.”
