Emergency Advice
This is to relate how extraordinarily well I was treated by the travel industry generally when my husband died suddenly, five days before a planned five-week trip. Every hostelry and transportation company refunded our deposits in full, with one glaring exception--(a hotel in) Ravello, Italy. Although I faxed them the notice eight days before our planned arrival, and subsequently sent a death certificate, they refused to reimburse anything at all.
On the whole, travelers should know how considerate and understanding the industry is during times of crisis. The action of our hotel was atypical. However, to avoid such losses, I believe travelers should obtain a commitment as to what portion is refundable under emergency circumstances.
