Alhambra : Irving Street Compromise

The City Council unanimously approved Atherton Baptist Home’s request to close the western half of Irving Street, between Atlantic Boulevard and 6th Street, creating a quiet cul-de-sac instead of a busy thoroughfare.
The plan is a compromise to an earlier suggestion to close the entire street. Jim Selvy, Atherton Baptist Home’s business manager, said the cul-de-sac met the parking concerns of nearby 6th Street residents and the safety concerns of Atherton residents.
Leroy Peterson, Atherton’s executive president, said high-speed traffic on Irving Street had endangered the home’s 370 elderly residents.
A T-shaped closure placed at the west end of Irving Street will allow trash trucks, street sweepers, delivery vehicles and cars to turn around.
A small park will fill much of the 50-foot wide area between Atlantic Boulevard and 6th Street, and the street’s camphor trees will be preserved.
