Don’t Tread on the Koran

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, Brunei — Hundreds of Japanese tires were withdrawn from Brunei after Muslims complained that the tread design resembled a verse in the Koran.
Chan Ching Eng, general manager of Goh Hock Kee Motors, said he imported more than 300 tires made by Yokohama Rubber Co. to be fitted on Mitsubishi vehicles he sells.
He said Islamic authorities in the oil-rich sultanate on Borneo island ordered the tires withdrawn, deeming them offensive to Islam.
Chan said Yokohama expressed regret over the tread design’s unintentional similarity with a Koranic verse.
