World IN BRIEF : MOROCCO : Voters Approve Revised Constitution
- Share via
The Moroccan government said voters gave overwhelming approval to a revised constitution that King Hassan II says will grant more authority to a new Parliament and bring a younger generation to high political office. The referendum is part of a new effort by the 63-year-old monarch to give a stronger democratic thrust to his reign. The reforms will enable the king to maintain his dominant role while devolving some minor powers to different branches of government. He says he wants to encourage younger, brighter people so the country and his dynasty can achieve a smooth transition into the next century.
