Three new aftershocks of the recent desert earthquakes, two of them with magnitudes of 4.0, occurred early Wednesday, Caltech scientists reported.
The first magnitude 4 temblor, at 4:44 a.m., was centered 11 miles northeast of Barstow. The second, at 5:50 a.m., was centered nine miles east of Desert Hot Springs, almost the same location as the magnitude 6.1 earthquake on April 22 that started the Landers-Big Bear earthquake sequence on June 28. The second temblor was followed two minutes later by a 3.4 jolt.
