The U.S. State Department Thursday opened a regional office in Los Angeles to work with foreign diplomats stationed in the Southwest, a move signifying the city’s growing importance as an international center.
The Office of Foreign Missions will serve approximately 100 foreign embassies, consulates and missions in Southern California, Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada, Utah and Colorado.
The regional office, at 10920 Wilshire Blvd. in Westwood, will handle issues such as taxes, registration, drivers’ licenses and insurance for foreign diplomats.
The missions previously were served by a regional office in San Francisco. That office will continue to serve the Northwest and Alaska.
