Shelton Boykin and Mike Johnson have been added to the Cal State Northridge men’s basketball coaching staff. Boykin led the Matadors in rebounding last season as a senior. Johnson, a graduate of Purdue, replaces Jerry Carrillo who left last spring to take a high school coaching job in Arizona.
Boykin and Johnson will serve as part-time assistants.
The 1967 Northridge football team that competed in the Junior Rose Bowl will be honored Saturday at North Campus Stadium before the Matadors’ 7 p.m. home opener against UC Davis.
Bruce Lemmerman, Northridge’s all-time leading passer and the director of operations for the Canadian Football League’s Edmonton Eskimos, will be among the former players participating in the ceremony. Sam Winningham, Northridge’s first coach, also will attend the 25-year reunion festivities.
The South Seas Volleyball Club on Monday will conduct tryouts at Taft High for its boys’ teams. The sessions are from 6 to 7:30 p.m., for 14- to 16-year-olds, and from 7:30 to 9, for 18-year-olds.
Another round of tryouts will be held at Taft on Sept. 18 from 5 to 6:30 p.m. for 14- to 16-year-olds and 6:30 to 8 p.m. for 18-year-olds. Players can attend either session.
