Thanks to Howard Rosenberg for a fair and much needed column, “Is the GOP Getting the Last Laugh?” (Sept. 2).
I’m that rarest of hyphenates, a writer-producer who also happens to be a conservative Republican. I am constantly amazed at how intolerant “Hollywood” is of anyone who doesn’t march to the liberal party line. The most familiar complaint of Hollywood conservatives is that it is rare indeed when a movie or TV show portrays a conservative character or theme in a positive light.
Hollywood often defends itself by saying, “We just hold up a mirror and reflect what’s going on.” So, using this same logic, where are the conservative values that America has elected three times in a row to the presidency? How come we never see a film or TV show that opposes abortion?
The answer is simple: Everyone knows the “Hollywood as mirror” analogy is simplistic. If films and TV shows don’t influence public behavior, why are there commercials? Why do corporations spend millions trying to get their products placed in movies?
The left appears to have the exclusive franchise when it comes to social messages broadcast in films and television shows.
