USD Women Beat SDSU in Soccer

In its first victory as a collegiate program, the University of San Diego women’s soccer team defeated San Diego State, 2-1, at USD Tuesday afternoon.
USD scored at 9:13 on an unassisted goal when Mt. Carmel graduate Dawn Birdsall made a direct kick. The Toreros scored again, at 73:51, when Birdsall fed Ally Parker--both are freshman--for the 2-0 lead. Lynn Murray scored an unassisted goal with 11 minutes to play for SDSU (1-2).
The Toreros (1-2) took three shots to SDSU’s nine. USD freshman goalkeeper Danielle Lopez, a Castle Park graduate, made six saves.
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
San Diego State narrowly escaped Pepperdine, scoring a 15-10, 15-9, 12-15, 15-17, 16-14 victory over the Waves.
Gracie Schutt had a match-high 29 kills, while teammates Stephanie Riley, Jennifer Miller and Suzanne Turcotte had 17 kills apiece.
SDSU is 7-2; Pepperdine is 2-7.
Point Loma Nazarene defeated Cal Lutheran, 8-15, 15-10, 15-13, 15-8, in a nonconference match. PLNC improved to 4-3, while the Kingsmen dropped to 4-9.
USD improved to 6-4 this season with a three-game sweep of Morehead State in a nonconference match at the Sports Center.
The Toreros scored a 16-14, 15-4, 15-9 victory as Morehead State dropped to 0-7. Junior Nikki Wallace led USD with 15 kills. Sophomore Amy McMahon had 10 kills and Jennifer Wrightson added nine.
MEN’S SOCCER
Cal Lutheran scored a 1-0 victory over PLNC in the Crusaders’ nonconference season opener. Cal Lutheran is 3-2.
