State firefighters used five aerial tankers Wednesday to battle a mountain fire that had burned at least 250 acres near Pauma Valley and was proving hard to put out.
A California Department of Forestry spokeswoman said the fire began at 3:15 p.m., near the intersection of Valley Center and North Lake Wohlford roads.
The origin of the fire is unknown. More than 230 firefighters battled the blaze, which was burning in steep terrain on Rodriguez Mountain.
The fire was about 20% contained late Wednesday, CDF spokeswoman Sheri Bolick said.
