LOS ANGELES : City’s Entire Request for Metro Red Line Backed

Brushing aside proposals to slash 15% from all new mass-transit construction proposals, a congressional conference committee on Thursday approved Los Angeles’ entire request for $110 million this year for construction of the Metro Red Line subway.
Mayor Tom Bradley said that Reps. Ed Roybal and Julian Dixon, both Los Angeles Democrats, registered a “tremendous victory” against the proposed budget cuts, giving the city enough money to complete the second phase of construction to Hollywood and begin the third phase.
The third phase will extend three branches of the subway--one west to Mid-City, another east to East Los Angeles and a third from Hollywood to North Hollywood.
Federal funds pay for about one-half of the cost of the Red Line. The rest comes from state and local taxes, primarily a pair of half-cent sales-tax surcharges in Los Angeles County.
