Carl J. Megel, 92, first full-time president of the American Federation of Teachers. A native of Hayden, Ind., Megel attended Franklin College and began his teaching career in a rural one-room school, where he taught first through sixth grade for $45 a month. He began his union activities in Chicago and served as AFT president from 1952 to 1964. Meel later worked on the union’s national staff for 18 years, lobbying for landmark legislation, including the 1965 Elementary and Secondary Education Act and the 1965 Voting Rights Act. On Sept. 18 in Rockville, Md., of congestive heart failure.
