LAGUNA BEACH — When the ball went to Dale Huss, Orange Lutheran was in good hands.
On a night when he was surrounded by fumbles and penalties, Huss rushed for three touchdowns and caught a touchdown pass to lead Orange Lutheran to a 25-13 nonleague victory over Laguna Beach Friday night.
The Lancers (2-1) overcame three turnovers and 82 yards in penalties, largely because of the efforts of Huss. Huss finished with 94 yards rushing in 19 carries, including three, one-yard touchdown runs.
Huss clinched the game with his final touchdown, a nine-yard scoring catch at the 5 minute 52 second mark of the third quarter. Huss outjumped Laguna Beach’s Bill Marlow in the back of the end zone to catch a deflected ball.
Laguna Beach (0-3) took a 13-12 lead with 19 seconds left in the first half when Patrick Wood hit Luke Matjas with a 38-yard touchdown pass. The score came after the Artists had fumbled at the Orange Lutheran 22-yard line, but then got the ball back two plays later when Chris Faubert intercepted a Chris Timothy pass with 30 seconds left.
Wood, who passed for 231 yards, then connected with Matjas on a fly pattern down the right sideline for the touchdown.
Orange Lutheran, which fumbled the ball away twice inside the Laguna Beach 20-yard line, took the lead early in the third quarter when Huss scored from a yard out. The touchdown was set up by Josh Balko’s fumble recovery at the Laguna Beach nine-yard line.
Orange Lutheran sacked Wood three times in the fourth quarter, including one sack with four minutes remaining that led to a fumble recovery by Eric Glessner.
