Fourth-Quarter Touchdowns Lift Calvary Chapel

NEWPORT BEACH — Two touchdowns in the fourth quarter helped Calvary Chapel defeat Southern California Christian, 23-7, in a nonleague football game Saturday at Newport Harbor High.
Calvary Chapel’s Waylan Kruse, a sophomore who completed six of seven passes for 76 yards, scored on a two-yard run with 11:30 left in the fourth quarter to give the Eagles (3-1) a 16-7 lead. Later, Kruse completed a nine-yard pass to Shane Valdez that set up Trevor Morris’ nine-yard touchdown with 6:33 left.
Mike Jacot, who rushed for 91 yards in 23 carries, gave SCC (1-3) a 7-0 lead when he finished a 16-play, 83-yard drive with a seven-yard run with 3:26 left in the first quarter. In the first half, Calvary Chapel’s time of possession totaled only 3 minutes 36 seconds. In the second half, SCC was called for 10 penalties for 90 yards.
Matt Kellogg carried 14 times for 89 of Calvary Chapel’s 107 yards rushing.
