Murdoch, French Form Cable Partnership: Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp. and France’s pay TV channel Canal Plus have formed a partnership to develop pay-per-view TV services in Europe. The partnership will develop technologies in satellite transmission, digital compression and encoding. News Corp. is already a 50% owner of B Sky B, a six-channel satellite service in the United Kingdom, and parent company of Fox film and TV studios in the United States. Canal Plus is Europe’s leading pay TV channel with 4.5 million subscribers throughout France, Germany, Spain, Belgium and West Africa. Pay-per-view TV, which is becoming increasingly popular in the United States, has been only experimental in Europe.
