AIR WARS: John Wayne Airport is busier than ever, despite cutting back daily flights this year from 87 to 86. Discount fare wars between the airlines has brought John Wayne up to 5.7 million passengers annually contrasted with 4.6 million two years ago. . . . It’s so popular, in fact, that strike-embattled USAir, which pulled out of there in May, 1991, now says its decision was a marketing blunder and is reviewing whether to request back in.
