Five candidates are vying for three seats on the Yorba Linda City Council in the Nov. 3 election.
Irwin M. Fried
Age: 60.
Occupation: Attorney.
Background: Elected to council in 1976; previously served four years as planning commissioner.
Issues: Supports building a high school if residents want one; supports continuing to contract with Brea for police services but opposes becoming involved in contract discussions between Brea and police officers.

Barbara Kiley
Age: 45.
Occupation: Businesswoman, political consultant.
Background: Member of Yorba Linda Service League; served on Bernardo Yorba Junior High School site council; political consultant to the group that opposed building a jail in Gypsum Canyon.
Issues: Proposes building a high school in Yorba Linda; proposes developing a master plan for the downtown area; supports contracting with Brea for police service and supports being included in any contract discussions between Brea and police officers.

Christine Norris
Age: 50.
Occupation: Realtor.
Background: Chairman of the Beautification Committee 1979-81; chairman of Cultural Heritage Committee, 1981-83; docent at Nixon Library & Birthplace; vice chairman of citizens group that fought airport in Chino Hills; board of directors of Taxpayers for a Centralized Jail.
Issues: Supports a study to determine if city should have its own police force, contract with Orange County Sheriff’s Department or continue to contract with Brea; supports preserving character of downtown; says the issue of a high school should be left to the school board.

Mark Schwing
Age: 52.
Occupation: Program manager.
Background: Incumbent, elected in 1988; chairman of citizens group that opposed the auto center.
Issues: Supports polling residents to see if they want a new high school; proposes a study to determine if city should have its own police department or continue to contract with Brea; supports participation in contract talks between Brea and police officers.

Daniel T. Welch
Age: 39.
Occupation: Attorney/college instructor.
Background: Member of Yorba Linda Rotary Club; coaches athletic teams.
Issues: Supports a high school in the city; supports a small-scale redevelopment plan for downtown area that includes the needs of the area’s residents and businesses; supports a study to determine whether Sheriff’s Department could provide police services for less money.
